Lumion Lightrail Model

Below are 5 images of my Lumion model. You can see the structures created on SketchUp, as well as the textures, the Lightrail, the light rail tracks and the people sitting or walking on the platform. There is also a building seen in the background to add urban context. Once again, the themes used to inspire this design were Studio Gang's social connectivity and Mies Van Der Rohe's idea that less is more.

This capture looks at the design from a distance. You can see here the difference between the simplicity of the design of the structure on the right and the more developed design showing how the different parts connect on the left.

The structure on the left includes many benches for people to sit while they wait for the Light Rail.

The structure on the right is more simplistic, as mentioned before, and is a platform where people would walk or stand, rather than sit.

SketchUp Model with Textures

From the 6 sets of 6 light to dark textures I chose one set from which to chose 3 textures (one light, one medium, and one dark) to add to my SketchUp Model. The set of textures I chose was the one in the photo below. I used the 2nd texture of each row to represent the different shades (the darker of the two).

I added the 3 textures to my model in the way I felt the shadows would actually lie (from the angle of the first photo). The pictures below show the model from afar showing all the textures, the model from above where two sides look like the same colour due to the different lighting from that angle, and a close up of the model.

SketchUp model (Week 3)

This week I made a few changes to my SketchUp model. Mainly, I repeated the previous two components of the model behind the original ones (as seen in the photo below). However, they were spaced with growing distance between them, and each structure is wider than the last (not including the first one). This was done to create the illusion of the structures not getting smaller in the distance when standing at the end of the platform and looking down. I also thought the design looked striking this way.

36 light to dark textures

This week's sketching involved these 36 light to dark textures (of 6 different designs).

New SketchUp model on Lumion

This week I recreated my SketchUp model, but this time using two concepts combined. The concepts used to create the bus stop design were "Social Connectivity" and "Less Is More". The amount of modern elements and the size and shapes of the designs by Studio gang represent social connectivity. What I try to develop in the left side of this design (which is not yet finished but updates are seen in newer posts), is a design that is not typical and shows connection between two elements.
On the right however, the structure is influenced by Mies Van Der Rohe's idea that "less is more". What he means by that is that you don't need the most intricate design or something very elaborate to convey a message or have a beautiful structure. This is why the structure on the right serves its purpose; it provides shade and a place for people to wait for the light rail.

I then placed this model in Lumion, as shown in the photos below. Again, part of the model was assigned underground.

This design was based on this sketch:

Exp. 2. Week 2 Sketches Combined

For this week's sketches, I grouped last week's sketches into pairs, and redrew the concepts combined. I looked at whatever I designed to be the ground floor and combined the two designs there.  I tried in one drawing to round the edges and experiment with shading, as shown on the 3rd page.

SketchUp model on Lumion

Here are some screenshots of the SketchUp model based on one of the concepts. For this task, I chose the Studio Gang theme "Social Connectivity".

I then placed this model in Lumion, as shown below. Part of the model is not seen because I chose for it to be underground.

Exp. 2. Week 1 Sketches

Here are some sketches inspired by 10 concepts; 5 of which relate to Studio Gang, and 5 that relate to Mies Van Der Rohe. Each sketch is replicated from another angle below it. The themes of both architects were thought up as a group. Both architects have a distinct style. The themes we came up with based on Studio Gang were:

  • Adaptability - Forming new structure over already functional ones
  • Renewable - Minimal environmental impact
  • Materiality - Solving a problem and creating opportunity through design
  • Escalation - Social revitalisation
  • Social connectivity - Architecture as a stage

The themes inspired by Mies Van Der Rohe were:

  • Less is more
  • Removing barriers between interior and interior
  • Simplicity through form and shape
  • Prism based geometries and repetition of shapes
  • Unrestrained spaces that flow
